All That You Wanted To Know About French TGV
France\’s TGV, that stands fortrain a grande viteese or high speed train in English, is world renowned for its speed and comfort. The TGV runs on five main lines in France.
Paris and the south-east France along with Lyon Dijon, Nice, Marseille, Avignon and Perpignon are connected by the TGV south-east line. This train halts at Geneva in Switzerland and passes through the French Alps.
Paris and the west coast are linked by the TGV Atlantic line. Nantes, La Rochelle, Toulouse the Loire Valley, Bordeaux and the French Basque are the stops allocated for this TGV train line.
The high speed TGV northern train line connects Paris to Lille and Calais, two of the principal cities in the north of France.
Eurostar, probably the most well known train line, runs between Paris and London via the Channel Tunnel, stopping at Lille, Calias and Ashford in Kent along the way.
The high speed TGV Thalys line benefits major European cities like Brussels, Cologne and Amsterdam, making travel to various European countries from France much easier.
Since the high speed train travel service has widely developed in the last few years, travelling via Paris is no longer a mandatory feature while travelling between provincial cities in France. For example the TGV line between Lyons and Nantes is direct now. So is with Bordeaux and Lilles and too many other cities.
While in service the TGV usually goes at a speed of 280-300km p/h with a record speed of 515km p/h.
Purchasing a train ticket in France is a complicated affair as it involves numerous special offers for the European and the non-European nationals. For a non-European national a pass known as Eurailpass is provided that allows one to travel for over a 2-week period but this pass costs more in France than in other countries where it can be bought 30% cheaper.
The French high speed TGV train is proof of the competence of France\’s railway directors. To learn more about alternative methods of travel, such as Driving rules in France please follow the hyperlinks.
